Fatstock & Fortnightly Store Market

THE CATTLE MARKET
DUNSWELL
FATSTOCK AND FORTNIGHTLY STORE MARKET

Forward – 290 head of stock including 77 Cattle, 152 Sheep and 61 Pigs.

PIGS
Sow numbers limited this week with a main buyer doing improvement works to the abattoir, meaning some had to be stopped until next week, but with next week being Easter we’re putting on a special Red Market for Cull Pigs ONLY on Wednesday (23 April), please contact us for more information. Despite circumstances, sow trade remained very similar to last week, topping at 60p/kg for a fleshy but not massive pair of sows from Foster Farms, Catwick.

Cutters to 180p/kg and £168.60, average 180.0p/kg.
Heavy Gilts to 108p/kg and £138.32, average 88.6p/kg.

Cull Sows to 60p/kg and £180.60, average 56.1p/kg.
Cull Boar to 51p/kg and £155.55.

SHEEP
Another good sized show of sheep, hoggs keep coming this year when we think we must be getting to the back of them, but it’s very good to see. Probably a slight lack of flesh generally today amongst hoggs and trade does reflect that. It’s a balancing act though, with early lambers from last year just starting to lose a tooth, but the trade off for flesh means it is probably worth keeping them an extra week or two at the moment, anything with good flesh is far easier to place.

Prime Hoggs
Standards to 315p/kg and £115, average 300.9p/kg.
Mediums to 349p/kg and £159, average 324.9p/kg.

Clean Sheep to 255p/kg and £168.

Cull Ewes to £200, average £154.32.
Feeding Ewes to £111, average £90.45.

Store Hoggs to £116, average £97.83.

CATTLE
Cattle keep getting more and more serious in recent weeks, not the biggest cattle forward this week by any means, to the point where averages on paper don’t do the trade justice. A wonderful pen of four Charolais show quality Heifers from Turner Bros, East Halton that would have been well capable of doing either job but probably weighing under 500kg making £2,050 a head. Calves somehow managed to eclipse the big ring trade though, 20 calves forward and only a handful over three months but continentals averages £761/head, with natives at £482 including a good number of fresh calves.
